Colin Cohran: Matter and Spirit

Saturday, November 2nd, 2013

WHO: Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501, 505-992-1100

WHAT: Colin Cochran: Matter and Spirit

WHERE: 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico. 87501

WHEN: Reception for the artist: Friday, November 29, 2 to 4pm

EXHIBITION DATE: November 29 through January 4, 2014

Gebert Contemporary will close 2013 with a solo feature of the new paintings of Colin Cochran. Entitled Matter and Spirit, the exhibition will feature approximately 15 paintings. Cochran continues to explore nature with lively images of laughing gulls and feisty hens, as well as lone ponderosas and the beckoning sea. He has always embraced a fearlessness when it comes to his choice of medium. The viewer will again see the use of gessoed felt and clayboard panel. And, of course, Cochran’s signature use of oil over mixed media which activates and enlivens the surface. These intimately-scaled paintings are enchanting. They capture both the humor and pathos of life.

Dirk De Bruycker: Painting in 2013

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

WHO: Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501, 505-992-1100

WHAT: Dirk De Bruycker: Painting in 2013

WHERE: Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501

WHEN: Reception for the artist: Friday, October 4, 5 to 7pm

Exhibition Date: October 4 through November 12, 2013

Gebert Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Dirk De Bruycker. This new body of work is exciting in its passion and richness. Colors are dense and saturated. While the palette of purple, yellow, oxblood, and orange may be familiar, it is the monolithic blocks of color which startle and surprise.

Dirk De Bruycker was born in Ghent, Belgium. Although based in Santa Fe, he spends much of his time in Nicaragua. The paintings of Dirk De Bruycker are included in the collections of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, the Ministry of Visual Arts in Brussels, and the New Mexico Museum of Art. The Art in Public Places Program chose two paintings by De Bruycker for installation at the University of New Mexico. De Bruycker’s work is also included in the Bellagio Collection (Las Vegas), the Microsoft Collection (Seattle), the Sprint Collection (Kansas City), the collection of the Federal Reserve in Kansas City, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York and many international private collections.

WHERE:   Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501

WHEN:     Reception for the artist: Friday, August 23, 5 to 7pm

Exhibition Date:   August 15 through September 10, 2013

Keiko Sadakane is returning to Santa Fe, and she is bringing with her the fruits of intense intellectual and artistic labor.  The new series, Geometric Painting after Piero della Francesca, is a vividly-colored group of 8 paintings.  Sadakane’s latest body of work translates the underlying geometries of Piero’s painting into the language of 21st-century abstraction.

Piero della Francesca was a 15th century Italian painter who was also known amongst his contemporaries as a gifted mathematician.  He is considered to be one of the most important painters of the early Renaissance.

Gebert Contemporary is the exclusive representative of Keiko Sadakane in the US. The work of Keiko Sadakane has been exhibited at the Mies van der Rohe Haus, Berlin, The Goethe Institut, Düsseldorf, the Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo, the Japanisches Kulturinstitut, Kőln, and the Museum Baden, Solingen. Her work is included in many distinguished public and private collections around the globe. She was born in Tokyo and has resided in Düsseldorf for many years.

Otis Jones: Recent Paintings

Friday, May 10th, 2013

WHO: Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501, 505-992-1100

WHAT: Otis Jones: Recent Paintings

WHERE: Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501

WHEN: Reception for the artist: Friday, July 5, 5 to 7pm

Exhibition Date: July 5 through August 12, 2013

Gebert Contemporary is honored to announce its first exhibition
of the paintings of Otis Jones.  Visitors to the exhibition will be
delighted to see a rich selection of approximately ten paintings.  Jones’ embrace of the complex minimalism of abstraction is as exciting as ever.  The viewer is engaged with marks and strokes and stretches of color that are echoed in the actual construction of the works.  Indeed these are paintings, but they are paintings that exude a physicality and force.  Jones has long considered his paintings to be objects, and this is obvious.  These pictures rise up from the wall with their canvases stretched tightly around prominent wooden supports, and the heavy staples sprinkled around the edges seem barely able to contain the fabric.  Jones continues his exploration of black and white and the occasional use of color.  This exhibition represents the enthusiastic re-emergence of Jones on the Santa Fe art scene.

Otis Jones was born in Texas in 1946.  He has exhibited in galleries and museums for over forty years.  The paintings of Otis Jones are included in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, MIT’s List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Missouri, and the Tyler Museum of Art in Tyler, Texas.  His work may also be found in distinguished private and corporate collections.

Covington Jordan

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

WHO:          Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501, 505-992-1100

WHAT:         Covington Jordan: Fable

WHERE:      Gebert Contemporary, 558 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501

WHEN:         Reception for the artist:  Friday, May 24, 5 to 7pm

Exhibition Date:  May 24 through July 1, 2013

Gebert Contemporary is delighted to announce the second exhibition of the paintings of Covington Jordan.  The artist’s current body of work—Fable–continues to explore themes of truth and perception.  Engaging imagery that is both commonplace but open to multiple meanings, these fifteen paintings beg for measured contemplation.  Jordan’s use of burlap and other rugged material presents a visual contrast with the lonely sensitivity of the subject matter.  Depictions of wolves, bouquets of flowers, even the religious imagery of the cross, offer themselves for an emotional scrutiny that compels the viewer to question accepted notions and beliefs.  Using language and stark visual elements, Jordan layers both materials and meaning in a visually beautiful and emotionally challenging group of paintings.

Cov Jordan was born in Arizona and has lived in Santa Fe for the last fifteen years.  Entirely self-taught, Jordan began painting in earnest only five years ago.  His work is in private collections across the country.
